Let's begin with something quite simple, changing the particular light bulbs. Complete this for the whole house, not only the kitchen. The usual light bulbs are the incandescent type, which must be replaced with compact fluorescent lightbulbs, which save energy. Although costing a little more initially, these bulbs last as long as ten of the conventional type as well as using a lot less energy. Together with different light bulbs, you should learn to leave the lights off whenever they are not needed. The kitchen lights especially tend to be left on all day long, just because the family tends to spend a lot of time there. Of course this also happens in other rooms, not merely the kitchen. Do an exercise if you like; take a look at how much electricity you can save by turning the lights off whenever you don't need them.
