Start out with replacing the light bulbs. Do this for the whole house, not only the kitchen. The normal light bulbs are the incandescent style, which must be replaced with compact fluorescent lightbulbs, which save energy. Although costing a little more in the beginning, these bulbs last as long as ten of the traditional type as well as using a lot less energy. One of the advantages is that for every one of these lightbulbs used, it means that approximately ten normal lightbulbs less will end up at a landfill site. It goes further than simply swapping the lights, though; turning off lights that aren't needed is actually another good thing to do. In the kitchen is where you'll frequently come across members of a family, and often the lights are not turned off until the last person goes to bed. Of course this also happens in other rooms, not merely the kitchen. Make a routine of having the lights on only when they are necessary, and you'll be astonished at the amount of electricity you save.

The kitchen alone gives you many small means by which energy and money can be saved. Natural living is something we can all perform, without difficulty. It's related to being practical, most of the time.
